How car clutches work?
Date: 2022.10.12 Viewed:
During the driving of the car, the driver can depress or release the clutch pedal as required to temporarily separate and gradually engage the engine and the transmission to cut off or transmit the power input from the engine to the transmission. Clutch is a common component in mechanical transmission, which can disengage or engage the transmission system at any time. The following editor will give you a detailed introduction to the working principle of the car clutch, the correct use of the car clutch and other related content.

How car clutch works:

The active part and the driven part of the clutch use the friction between the contact surfaces, or use liquid as the transmission medium (hydraulic coupling), or use magnetic transmission (electromagnetic clutch) to transmit torque, so that the two can be connected. Temporarily disengaged, it can be gradually engaged again, and the two parts are allowed to rotate relative to each other during the transmission process.

At present, friction clutches (referred to as friction clutches) that are compressed by springs are widely used in automobiles.

The torque from the engine is transmitted to the driven plate through the friction between the flywheel and the contact surface between the pressure plate and the driven plate. When the driver steps on the clutch pedal, the large end of the diaphragm spring drives the pressure plate to move backward through the transmission of the mechanical parts, and the driven part is separated from the active part at this time.

car clutch action

1. Ensure that the car starts smoothly

The car is in a static state before starting, if the engine and the gearbox are rigidly connected, once the gear is engaged, the car will suddenly rush forward due to the sudden connection of the power, which will not only cause damage to the parts, but also the driving force will not be enough to overcome the forward rush of the car. The resulting huge inertia causes the engine speed to drop sharply and stall. If the clutch is used to temporarily separate the engine and the gearbox at the start, and then the clutch is gradually engaged, due to the phenomenon of slippage between the active part and the driven part of the clutch, the torque transmitted from the clutch can be gradually increased from zero. The driving force of the car is also gradually increased, so that the car starts smoothly.

2. Easy to shift gears

During the driving process of the car, different transmission gears are often used to adapt to the changing driving conditions. If there is no clutch to temporarily separate the engine from the gearbox, the force transmission gears engaged in the gearbox will not be released due to the load, and the pressure between the meshing tooth surfaces is very large and it is difficult to separate. Another gear to be meshed will be difficult to mesh due to the unequal peripheral speeds of the two. Even if it is forced into meshing, it will produce a large impact on the tooth end, which is easy to damage the parts. The clutch is used to temporarily separate the engine and the gearbox and then shift gears, then the originally engaged pair of gears is removed due to the load, and the pressure between the meshing surfaces is greatly reduced, so it is easy to separate. As for the other pair of gears to be meshed, due to the small moment of inertia after the drive gear is separated from the engine, the circumferential speed of the gears to be meshed can be made equal or nearly equal by appropriate shifting action, thereby avoiding or reducing the impact between the gears.

3. Prevent the overload of the transmission system

When the car brakes in an emergency, the wheels suddenly decelerate sharply, and the drive train connected to the engine still maintains the original speed due to the inertia of rotation. parts are easily damaged. Since the clutch relies on friction to transmit torque, when the load in the drive train exceeds the torque that can be transmitted by the friction force, the main and driven parts of the clutch will automatically slip, thus preventing the overload of the drive train. .

4. Reduce torsional shock

The working principle of the car engine determines the instability of its output torque. In the power stroke, the combustion chamber gas explosion produces a great shock torque, while in the other strokes, it relies on inertia to drag the engine. Although the inertia of the rotating system of the engine itself can reduce the torsional vibration, the residual impact force still has an adverse effect on the subsequent gearbox and drive shaft. The damping spring (tangentially distributed) in the clutch can significantly reduce the torsional shock caused by the engine and prolong the life of the transmission gear.

How to adjust the car clutch

1. Park the car under the lift, release the handbrake; find the position of the top column of the chassis, and raise the lift foot to the position of the top column of the chassis;

2. Lift the vehicle up, find the place of the clutch, and the clutch cable will appear next to the clutch;

3. Use a wrench to loosen the screw on one side. If the clutch is low, loosen the left screw and tighten the right screw. If the clutch is high, loosen the right screw and tighten the left screw to the right.

How to adjust the car clutch

1. Turn off the flame, pull the handbrake, neutral;

2. Lie down at the driver's feet and remove a piece of plastic with a light. During the removal process, push it in the direction of the front of the car, and then the opposite direction will be separated from the car. Just pull it down. Be careful not to break the inside. flirting lamp wire;

3. Find an open-end wrench, unscrew it counterclockwise, and then you can adjust it up and down, clockwise is to lower, and counterclockwise is to raise;

4. After the adjustment, test the car. If you feel good, fix the screw with a clockwise wrench and install the plastic plate.

5. Matters needing attention: The clutch is divided into mechanical type and hydraulic type. The mechanical type is adjustable, and the hydraulic type is not adjustable.

The correct way to step on the clutch

1. Quickly lift at the beginning of the pedal lift, when the clutch appears semi-linked, the pedal lift speed is slightly slower;

2. From the process of linkage to complete combination, slowly lift the pedal;

3. While the clutch pedal is lifted, gradually step on the accelerator pedal according to the resistance of the engine, so that the car can start smoothly;

4. The clutch pedal should be controlled by the forefoot. When stepping on the clutch pedal, step on the clutch pedal with the sole of the foot, and the heel should be close to the ground. When the clutch is stepped on the lowest point, the knee should be kept slightly bent.

5. Do not step on the pedals with your toes or lift your heels off the ground to avoid insufficient strength or slippage.
